Carolyn's Pick:

"State of Wonder"
by Ann Patchett

I devoured this book by Ms.Patchett since my experience with her previous novel "Bel Canto" was a moment in my reading experience that I will always remember. She speaks as a narrator observing this complex cast. I found the story interesting considering its author's history but I am still wondering as to the purpose of the eating of bark ... maybe it was only to prolong her child bearing years. I did hear the jungle and feel the insects ... not my most enjoyable read

"The Boy In The Suitcase"
By Lene Kaaberbol and Agnete Friis

A great weekend read! Best suited for stormy days when you're trapped in the house, this book is full of travel and adventure. Many parts of the story are so well written, it's like the characters are sitting down talking to you.  Definitely not what I expected - it touches on some serious present-day political themes in a very creative way.

"Song Of Achilles"
By Madeline Miller

It's a nice try, but not really anything groundbreaking. Despite a disappointing beginning and depiction of some of the main events, the ending was creatively done. A very romanticized and juvenile approach to a classic myth.

“Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site”

By Sherri Duskey Rinker

Lately the only books I've found time to get my hands on have been my toddler's board books, pop-ups, and anything with trucks, trains and Mickey Mouse. With that being said, recently one evening my little man and I sat down to read our nightly bed time story, and knowing that i was more than overdue to write a new review Carolyn suggested Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site. Out of all of the books my son and i have collected  lately this would have to be my new favorite,  as well as Rylan’s. The illustrations take this bedtime story to another level. The reds, oranges and other bright colors kept Rylan’s attention page after page. Not only are the illustrations realistic but they are kid-friendly with adorable faces on the tractors and trucks. It’s definitely an awesome choice for those of you who have young sons, nephews and grandsons!

Sue's Pick:

"The Bridge Of Scarlet Leaves" by Kristina McMorris

I am not a big fan of romance or historical fiction, but "The Bridge of Scarlet Leaves" sucked me pretty quickly into the story.  Based loosely on the author's familial experiences, it tells of the lives and adventures of two families living in Los Angeles in 1945.  The story is made more compelling by one of the families being of Japanese heritage.  At heart, it is a story of love, of anger, of bitterness and forgiveness.  It is beautifully written and exquisitely researched, giving insight to both sides of the Japanese internment.  I'm thinking this would be an excellent airplane/beach read!

       Let's Pretend This Never Happened:

                (A Mostly True Memoir)

                  by Jenny Lawson

Okay...one thing: don't read this book if you're offended by coarse language..... well, two things: also don't read it if you are a PETA member....... okay, maybe three things: also don't read it if you don't like liquids squirting out your nose while you're reading portions aloud to someone you love.  Trust me.  This book is !*@! FUNNY!  It's also raunchy, raw, irreverant, sarcastic and borderline rude.

Above all that, though, it is funny.  I mean it.  I hardly ever lie.

wind_through_the_keyhole.gif"The Wind Through The Keyhole: A Dark Tower Novel" by Stephen King

"The Wind Through The Keyhole" by Stephen King returns to the Mid-World adventures of gunslinger Roland and his ka-tet on the quest to reach the Dark Tower. The story opens in the time that elapsed between the end of "Wizard and Glass" and "Wolves of the Calla," so it could be called "The Dark Tower 4.5."  Along the way, Roland tells a story from his past, revealing more of the events that shaped him, and contributed to the fall of Gilead. Several years after the gunslinger series concluded (followed by a series of fill-in-the-blanks-of-Roland's-youth graphic novels), this is a welcome return to the saga.

Hollie's Pick: "Shatter Me"
By Tahereh Mafi

Juliette hasn't touched anyone in exactly 264 days. The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette's touch is fatal. As long as she doesn't hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don't fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color. The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war-- and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she's exactly what they need right now. Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

I am excited for the next installment of this series to be published. This was one of those books that I couldn’t put down. I even put in my purse and took it everywhere with me so I could steal a minute or two while grabbing the kids from school or waiting for the train. I highly recommend you read this book if this is the genre you like.

"The Power Of Six" by Pittacus Lore

Remember this name: Setrakus Ra.  He is the supreme commander of the Mogadorians, out to extinguish any hope of the Loriens to re-establish control over their own world. I am sure that in time, he will assume a greater role in the hunt for the Nine legacy children.

In The Power or Six the story line of "I Am Number Four" picks up where it left off with John, Sam (his best human friend), Six and Bernie Kosar, a Chimaera (a shape shifting animal from Lorien) running from the police, FBI, the US military; all while evading the Mogadorians, too. John, Sam and Bernie Kosar split from Six to retrieve both his and Six's "legacy" chests from the Mogadorian headquarters in a West Virginia cave. John and Sam infiltrate the Mogadorian cave, cause all sorts of bedlam and free Nine who had been captured.  Six travels to Spain to defend/protect/rescue/save a recently identified legacy child named Marina (Number Seven).  While there, Six also finds out that there's an additional Tenth Lorien named Ella!

The Power of Six is a fitting sequel to I Am Number Four. More of the personalities and histories of the characters are revealed and the fast pace of the story never lets up. Can't wait for the third installment (I wonder how many there are?)!

Guest Review

"Dragonflight"

by Anne McCaffrey

Reviewed by Dallas Creagh

Dragons are alive and doing well on the planet Pern, which orbits the star Rukbat in the Sagittarian sector. Dragons and their riders were needed 400 years ago to destroy the deadly Silver Threads that fell through the skies of Pern. Now only F'lar, rider of the bronze dragon Mnementh, believes Threads will fall again. Once there were six weyrs of dragons, now only one remains...and when the first new fall of Threads occurs, it's obvious drastic measures will need to be taken.

I first read "Dragonflight" in 1968. Since then, I'm sure I've read it at least 50 times. It is absolutely marvelous. The sequels are great as well, and so is the prequel, "Dragonsdawn," telling of the arrival of humans on Pern.
