Stones Into Schools: Promoting Peace With Books Not Bombs, In Afghanistan and Pakistan
By Greg Mortenson

From the author of "Three Cups of Tea," Greg Mortenson returns with yet another compelling plan to build more schools, and continue the push for change in a whole new country. "Stones for Schools" takes place in a secluded northeast part of Afghanistan which only will prove that there are extremely dangerous places in our world that are dying for someone to be brave enough to tackle them. Fortunately, for us, Mortenson is just our guy to do the job. He must go through a roller coaster of emotions, let downs, and successes as he deals with the government, and the effects of mother nature herself. Mortenson's true life story is packed with adventure, sorrow, and the ever so important message that is the platform of his whole operation. "Promoting peace with books, not bombs," is a good reminder to everyone that we are all human, and we can make a lot of miracles happen with very little money. If you are the kind of person who has that inner need to help others, or make change in our world, let Greg Mortensin be your inspiration, I know he was mine.

The Gardener
by S.A. Bodeen

The Gardener is a great book for young adults. I feel that many books that interest me are written from a woman's perspective but this book is written from a young man's prospective. Mason is a strong athlete and academic student who has had difficulties in his life. He has persevered through his own troubles and always feels the need to do the right thing. This time the right thing is helping out a beautiful girl whose troubles he has no idea of guessing. Mason finds himself in the middle of discovering where he comes from and an unusual tie to this girl. The Gardener was an exciting read that I had a difficult time putting down.

FOOD HEROES
by Georgia Pellegrini

This book is a new release that will NOT make you gain weight! Written by a woman who traveled so that we could vicariously experience what all "foodies" would love. She profiles 16 people from all over the world who are preserving food traditions the way they should be - with time and a love of the ingredient. Sausages, fish, wild mushrooms, figs are just a few of the fantastic foods she learns to treat with respect and truly enjoy. The people she profiles come from all walks of life and often have sacrificed monetary gain to preserve simple, old-fashioned methods. Recipes for each ingredient are included, but this book is really more about recognizing farmers and producers who truly love and work for their food of choice.

Girl In Translation
By Jean Kwok

Girl in Translation, written by Jean Kwok is simply breathtaking. Kim, at eleven has come to New York with her mother for a new beginning. It's modern America, and they live with cockroaches and have no heat. There are sweatshops, and Kim has to work with her mother. Definitely a new perspective of our America. She's only eleven...how can this be? This book took me totally by surprise, and held me in its pages to the end. Great read.

The Red Pyramid (The Kane Chronicles, #1)
By Rick Riordan

Be prepared to learn a lot of Egyptian history and lore in The Kane Chronicles, a fast paced, heart-thumping new series from Rick Riordan, the author who brought us Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. The Red Pyramid, the first book of the series, is the audio taped narrative of Sadie and Carter Kane, descendants of the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt and untrained Egyptian magicians. The story tells of their spellbinding adventures in preventing the god of chaos, Set, from destroying the world. It is also a story of Sadie and Carter's losses and new beginnings. You'll meet many interesting characters such as Khufu, a Lakers loving, basketball playing chimp, Muffin, Sadie's pet cat, who's actually the Egyptian cat goddess Bast, and Philip of Macedonia, a white crocodile who lives in a swimming pool in Brooklyn, along with many others. Its a lo-o-o-ng story, 528 pages, but worth every one!

Lift
             By Kelly Corrigan

Kelly Corrigan's Lift is not a difficult read; that is, if you only take into account the size of the book, the number of pages and font choice. Following Corrigan's memoir The Middle Place, published in 2008, Lift picks up as a love letter to her two daughters, Georgia and Claire. Honest, fearless, tender, heartbreaking and gut-wrenchingly TRUE, this small book lets you inside the heart and soul of this mother/daughter(s) relationship(s).
I love that the title is taken from a hang-gliding term; that one must fly directly into rough air because the turbulence prevents you from "sinking out" ~ it provides the "lift". Ah, Life! Such a mystery! Such a roller-coaster! Such a joy!
Just read it ~ and then give one as a gift to some mother or daughter YOU might know and love. Then, if you haven't already, read The Middle Place as well. And, if you're not completely hooked on Kelly Corrigan by then, look her up on "You Tube", and then just leave it at that. You don't want to like, stalk her or anything!
